Didn't sell? Questions owners ask

Where did it stop?

Offsell.com editorial team · Last reviewed

I had buyer interest but no offers. What does that mean?

The short answer

Interest without offers usually means buyers were curious but not convinced. Common causes are a gap between the expected value and what buyers could justify, perceived risk such as owner dependence or customer concentration, a weak reason for that buyer to acquire, incomplete information or a buyer whose priorities changed. Buyer feedback is the best guide to which applied.

The Offsell view

Meetings are not commitment. An offer requires a buyer to believe the business fits its plans at a price it can defend internally.

Why doesn't interest turn into an offer?

CauseTypical signal
Valuation gapBuyers go quiet after seeing the asking value.
Perceived riskRepeated questions about the owner, a major customer or contracts.
Weak strategic rationalePolite interest, little urgency.
Incomplete informationBuyers ask for figures or detail that are slow to arrive.
Buyer prioritiesA buyer pauses for internal reasons unrelated to the business.

What can you do next?

  • Collect the feedback from each meeting
  • Address the most repeated concern
  • Re-test the value against evidence
  • Look for buyers with a stronger reason to acquire
