Who Might Buy My Business?

Discover the types of companies that could have a strategic reason to acquire your business.

Your most suitable buyer may not be actively searching for businesses for sale.

They may be an established trade competitor, a complementary business, a regional group looking to expand or an acquisitive organisation seeking specialist capabilities.

Our short confidential assessment helps you explore which types of buyers may be relevant to your business, without publicly advertising it for sale.

Free preliminary assessment. No company name required to start. No obligation. No buyer contacted.

Initial indications only, not verified buyer demand.

Direct buyer search

We don't list businesses. We find buyers.

Who might buy your business?

Potential purchasers include direct trade acquirers, complementary businesses, expansion buyers and sector consolidators. The most suitable company may not be actively searching for a business advertised for sale. Specific suitability depends on your activities and the buyer’s strategic rationale.

Why companies acquire established businesses

An acquisition can add customers, skilled employees, operating capacity, specialist capability or a new geographic base. A credible reason must go beyond simply being in the same sector. Offsell’s preliminary assessment describes these possibilities, not verified acquisition demand.

Types of trade and strategic buyers

A competitor may value additional capability; an adjacent business may seek complementary services. Regional or national groups may consider geographic expansion. Consolidators and PE-backed operating companies can be relevant where earnings, management continuity and deal size support their criteria. Appropriate suppliers or customers need particular confidentiality care.

What affects buyer interest

Underlying earnings, customer concentration, management strength, transferable contracts and capital investment needs all matter. Smaller businesses can offer specialist value; turnover below £1m or unknown profitability is a reason for human review, not automatic rejection. No valuation or probability of finding a buyer is calculated here.

Selling due to retirement

Retirement can make succession and handover especially important. Buyers may need to understand how the operation would continue without the owner and whether key relationships can transfer. A management buyout or employee ownership trust is a separate exit route requiring its own professional review.

How confidentiality works

Your assessment does not advertise your business or contact any buyer. After an agreed process begins, selected buyers must pass the relevant identity, rationale, NDA and seller approval checks before identifying information is disclosed. An NDA alone is not permission. A sale cannot remain anonymous indefinitely, and no process can guarantee against every confidentiality risk.

How Offsell researches and approaches potential acquirers

A confidential adviser review considers the business, its strategic fit and any excluded or protected buyers. Where a sale process is agreed, Offsell combines buyer intelligence with research-led direct origination and experienced transaction support. Potential buyers are researched and approved before controlled approaches; this assessment does not initiate that process.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a buyer for my business?

Start with the commercial reasons another company might acquire it: customers, capabilities, scale or geography. This assessment outlines potential categories; a confidential adviser review is needed to research specific companies.

Can I find a buyer without advertising my business for sale?

An off-market process identifies and approaches selected acquirers directly rather than listing the business publicly. Finding a suitable buyer is not guaranteed.

Do I need to provide my company name?

No. Preliminary results need no company identity or contact details. Company name and website are also optional when requesting a confidential review.

Are there trade buyers for smaller companies?

A smaller company may offer specialist capabilities or customer relationships. Suitability depends on more than turnover, and lower turnover does not automatically rule out a human review.

Will my competitors find out I am considering selling?

The assessment contacts nobody. In an agreed process, exclusions and controlled disclosure help manage risk, but absolute secrecy cannot be guaranteed.

Does Offsell contact buyers automatically?

No. Completing the assessment or requesting a review does not authorise buyer approaches or disclosure. Your instructions and the agreed approval process remain necessary.

Does the assessment tell me what my business is worth?

No. Turnover is not company value, and this assessment does not calculate a valuation or numerical buyer probability.

What happens after I request a confidential buyer review?

Your request is saved and an Offsell adviser considers the information before contacting you about the buyer landscape and whether an off-market sale is appropriate. It is not acceptance of a mandate.
